About Fosseway.net

Welcome to Fosseway.net designed to offer you information, advice and recommendations on places to visit, things to do, where to stay, eat and drink on or near the Fosse Way, the old Roman road through Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire, and the Cotswolds.

The Fosse Way is an old Roman road which ran from Lincoln southwest through Newark, Leicester, the Cotswolds , on through Cirencester and Bath and down to Exeter.
The name Fosse – comes from the latin “Fossa” and describes the “ditches” or “drains” (e.g. French “fosse” meaning septic tank or sewer) which ran either side of the roadway to keep it dry and stop flooding and mud.
The northern and southern extremities of the old Roman road are now difficult to trace, so we concentrate on the section from Leicestershire/Warwickshire down through the Cotswolds to Cirencester, where the route is well-signposted as the B4455 in the northern section, becoming the A429 at Halford through Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, Northleach and on to Cirencester (Roman Corinium).

The road only passes through some charming towns and villages – Brinklow, Halford, Moreton-in-Marsh, Stow-on-the Wold and Cirencester, through very English countryside especially through the Cotswolds. A host of pubs, B&B, craft workshops, artisan producers lie on on near the road.

The old Roman road would have been no more than 5 metres wide. The soil from the ditches on either side would have been piled up to form a foundation with big heavy stones, then a layer of smaller stones and gravel to provide the surface. The roadway would have a camber for drainage

As long as you are not in a hurry this is a delightful road through some of the best of the English countryside with numerous and attractive small towns and villages, plenty of places to see and visit.

The www.fosseway.net website is designed to provide information to visitors and locals alike on the attractions and services of this beautiful area, both on the modern Fosse Way and within easy distance of it.
