A new arrival takes the form of Oeno - an online merchant with a shop Cirencester, Gloucestershire. This is no traditional, stuffy winemerchant, but a stylish and informative way of presenting a smallish range of well-chosen and very interesting wines. Whilst there are some good classics available, there are many less well-known wines and regions – including Sicily, Corsica and Slovenia – predominantly from small growers.

No pile it high – sell it cheap approach here – the wines are elegantly displayed with very good tasting notes – and the opporunity to taste in shop – the shop environment is impressive and prompts you to linger and explore – prices start at about £6.00 – so no bargain basement, but not extortionate for the quality on offer!

We hold regular tastings in our Cirencester shop with bottles open every Friday and Saturday for you to come in and taste.

Chipping Campden is the archetypal Cotswold Village – mellow yellow stone houses, thatched roofs, an ancient market hall, a beautiful parish church (St James) and nowadays a good sprinkling of antique shops, craft galeries and plenty of places to eat and drink well.
Bennetts Fine Wines looks every inch the old-fashioned traditional wine merchant – small, atmospheric shop with stone floors and a slightly hushed atmosphere. The shop has an impressive selection of top quality Burgundy, Champagne, Claret and Port. plus a healthy harvest from the rest of Europe and the New World.
There is also an excellent website (see www.bennettsfinewines.com). On Saturdays there are always wines open for tasting and there is also a programme of tasting evenings for customers.

Edward Sheldon is a very traditional country wine merchant – in the middle of good farming and hunting countryside southeast of Stratford-upon-Avon. (NB Now part of Bennetts Fine Wines )Their premises are redolent of their long history, and you’d be forgiven for expecting something a bit “stuffy”. But amongst the fine clarets, revered Burgundies and Hunting Port you will find an exciting range of well-chosen wines from the New World and Old. With proper cellars, a facinating day book ledger from 100 years ago and knowledgeable staff it is worth a leisurely visit – there are also a few good eateries and food shops in the town. An example of their less tradtional range is the Rive Haute Sauvignon from the excellent Plaimont Co-operative, which is a Vin de Pays du Gers in South West France. Jane McQuitty reviewed this wine in the Times “..squeaky clean stainless-steel fermented Sauvignon made from grapes picked in the cool of the early morning to ensure the zingiest results. Oozing smashing ripe, grassy, gooseberry and whitecurrant fruit” – I think she liked it. So did we.
