compton verney houseThe magnificent Compton Verney house and art gallery reopens after its winter closure on 21 March 2009 (until 13 December 2009).2009 will see the official opening of the ‘Capability’ Brown footpaths –giving you long lost views of the gallery and grounds, which are delightful to wander in on warm sunny days, offering extensive views of the Warwickshire countryside. The Gallery is open Tuesday – Sunday 11am – 5pm and Bank Holiday Mondays.

From 21 March – 31 May 2009 Compton Verney stages an exhibition on the theme of Diana and Actaeon.

In Greek mythology we read about Actaeon the hunter who inadvertently stumbles upon Diana bathing in the nude. As a punishment for catching this glimpse, she turns him into a stag and he is subsequently torn apart by his own dogs. Using works that relate directly to this mythical tale, the exhibition seeks to look at the changes in its portrayal using paintings from antiquity, the Renaissance, Mannerism, the Baroque, Classicism, the 20th century and contemporary art.

The event brings together works by artists including Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso, Nicholas Poussin, Gerhard Richter, Auguste Rodin, Peter Paul Rubens and Egon Schiele.

Situated just a mile or so east of the Fosse Way , 9 miles east of Stratford-upon-Avon on the B4086 between Wellesbourne and Kineton and is 6 miles drive from the M40, Junction 12 – follow the brown signs.
